Alex Carlson – Co-Head Coach
Alex Carlson is a non-profit development specialist, film lover, ginger rights advocate, and busy dad who lives in Woodbury. He started the East Ridge Speech Team with his wife Katie in 2009 as a fun side project with no idea that it would grow into such a huge part of his life. Alex coaches a little bit of everything, but he especially loves Humorous. He has met some of his favorite people through coaching the East Ridge Speech Team.
Katie Carlson – Co-Head Coach
Katie Carlson has been coaching for the East Ridge Speech Team since its inception in 2009 specializing in Original Oratory, Drama/Prose, and Duo. In addition to her forensic experiences, Katie has directed several theatrical productions and has a B.A. in Theatre Arts. By day, she is an English educator at ERHS and by night she doubles as chauffeur, jungle gym, and personal chef to two busy boys, Oscar and Charlie.
Katie Scholz is the Head Debate Coach at East Ridge High School and one of the Public Address Coaches for the East Ridge Speech Team, specializing in Discussion and Extemp. Speaking. In her “real life,” Katie is an Intellectual Property Attorney working primarily with patents and trademarks. Katie has been coaching speech since 2006, joining the East Ridge Speech team in 2011. Katie loves history, discussing politics and current events, and her dog Baxter.
Kate Tosteson is an English teacher at East Ridge High School. She has been coaching speech since 2009 and coaching with East Ridge since 2012. She was also an avid speecher and theater participant during all four years of high school. She loves working with multiple categories but has especially focused on Great Speeches and Duo in the past few years. When she isn’t teaching or coaching Speech, Mrs. Tosteson enjoys reading, cooking and baking, swimming, playing piano, and going on walks with her husband and their dog.
Ben Habegger has been involved in speech every year since he first competed in 2010 at Eastview High School. He became State Champion of Storytelling in 2011. He then coached up at Moorhead High School for four years, while getting a degree in Communications and Theatre Art at Concordia College. Now coaching for East Ridge High School, Ben is also an actor and videographer in the twin cities area. While not working, he enjoys playing video games and spending time with his wife.
Caitlyn Parsons is a Speech-Language Pathologist at Bailey Elementary and is excited to be a coach with East Ridge this year! She participated in speech as a storyteller for six years and was also heavily involved in theatre and show choir in high school. When she isn’t coaching or working with students at Bailey, Caitlyn can usually be found playing with her adorable cat, going on hikes, playing video games, or reading mystery stories.
Kajsa is a proud alum of the East Ridge Speech team and is thrilled to be back as a coach. When she’s not coaching, she works as the Managing Director at Merrill Community Arts Center and enjoys directing and choreographing at various Twin Cities Theaters. Although she only coaches sad categories such as Drama, Duo, and POI/Poetry, she has a great love for comedy and can be heard on the podcast “Taped Over” or seen performing comedic improv with her team, “Half-price Mangoes.”
Jeric Basilio is an East Ridge alum who is now pursuing his future career in nursing at Saint Catherine University. While Jeric was a student at East Ridge, he competed in humor, duo, and storytelling. Speech was a large stepping stone within building his love for performing and he is excited to pass on any sort of wisdom he has to this year’s speech team. In his free time, he enjoys breathing and drinking water.
